Ben - 1 month

*posted at 6 weeks, but written around 5

Weight:
~12.5 lbs! This is somewhere in the 80-90th percentile!

Eating: Still breastfeeding! Attempting to follow "Moms On Call", so he's eating at 7am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 5:30pm, 8:30pm and then I do a dream feed between 9:30/10:00 before I go to bed. He wakes up typically between 12:30 and 1:30, then again around 4:30am. (of course, there are variances on this, such as last night when he woke up at 11:30pm, 2:30am and 4:30am)

Sleeping: Not terrible. He especially likes to be held, so will sleep contently and for a long time if this is the case. However, I prefer him to sleep in the rock n' play and he tends to wake up more if he is in that. His first nap happens in the car to drop Canon off, then he sleeps at 10am, 1:30pm, again in the car around 4pm, and 6:30pm before final bedtime around 8:30/9:00pm. His best nap is the 10am one. I typically have to come in around 2:30pm and let him sleep on my chest to get the most of out that nap. And of course, the 6:30pm nap he typically spends in the swing since we're eating dinner and doing bedtime with Canon. I have to say, he isn't sleeping as soundly or deeply at night as I'd like. About 30-45minutes after his middle of the night feedings, he'll start his gagging, coughing, moving routine until he starts to cry, then I have to pick him up, rock him a little and attempt to put him back down.

Clothes: He quickly jumped into his 3 month clothes!

Likes: Being held, laying under his activity mat and his big brother!

Dislikes: The car and sleeping in the rock n' play.

Doing: We're trying to get out of the house, even though I know it doesn't help to not nap at home, but it makes me more sane! We're going to chapel at ILS on Wednesdays and Bible Study at FBCA on Thursdays. Also planning coffee and play dates. Ben was baptized on January 18th at ILS and the whole family, plus lots of friends, were there! We went bowling one night just to get out of the house and have had lots of visitors!

On Managing Two: I feel like we've finally got a good thing going in terms of Canon and Ben. Canon always wants to see him and give him kisses in the morning and evenings and lay with him if he's on the play mat. We've got a routine for the mornings to get us all out the door and its going pretty well. Aaron tutors on Tuesday/Thursday nights until about 6:45, so I do both boys dinner and getting ready for bed (almost) by myself. Canon and I play from the time we get home until 5:30pm, when I feed Ben and he watches Odd Squad on PBS (btw, we just discovered this show and he LOVES it). At 6pm I eat with Canon while Ben sits in the bouncy chair with us, then at 6:30pm Ben gets put in the swing while Canon and I play some more/change into PJ's etc. We've started putting Canon to sleep a little earlier to give Aaron and I a bit more downtime before Ben's 2nd bedtime routine starts, which has been really nice. I've even gotten to go to the gym twice this week after Canon goes to sleep!

Myself: I feel like the postpartum hormones have finally started to settle.  I'm not waking up drenched in sweat as much anymore and the spotting has stopped. I got to the gym a few times this week, which makes me feel so much better. I find I have a hard time balancing what to do while Ben sleeps - do I sleep too? Do I clean the apartment? Do I blog? Do I read blogs? Typically I sleep/read blogs, but then I feel like I didn't get anything done that I actually wanted to, so its a constant back and forth. This month I'm (obviously) trying to blog more myself before I spend an hour reading about other people's lives and check a few things off my to-do list each day. Also, to give myself grace when I just need a nap! Also, for records sake, if the scale I have at home is the same as the doctors, I have about 5 more lbs to lose to get to my "first trimester" weight, and about 5 more after that to get to where I was when I started working out again last February. Of course, not everything has settled the same way, and I live in workout leggings, but my "fat jeans" do fit and I can at least get my pre-pregnancy jeans on and buttoned - but not quite walk out of the house comfortable.

I don't want to do the comparing too much between him and Canon, but the one thing I can't get over is the difference in their weight! Granted, Ben was over 1lb heavier at birth, but right now at 5ish week's he's also 2lbs heavier than Canon was at 6 weeks! I have to admit, I feel pretty proud about that. I often refer back to my blog posts about Canon at each age, but I'm not finding them super helpful, which is why I'm going to attempt to follow this kind of template this time around with Ben, in case we have another baby at some point. Probably the most helpful thing this month has been my great mom-friends that have been there for my crazy questions and stories. Seriously, I feel like I forgot so much about the early stages that I'm like a first time mom all over again! So thank you so much to those ladies who I've been texting like crazy and knocking on your door!!!
Also, in looking back at my post about Canon, it seems like we're already about to where Canon was at 10/11 weeks in terms of sleep, so maybe I should just shut my mouth about it and be happy, haha! Its all about perspective :)

going public

Well...there is not really any other way to say this but... Aaron and I are having a BABY! Yep, Baby Schultz should be arriving this Labor Day. We could not be more thrilled about the news! Once we got through the 12-week ultrasound, which is what this picture is from, we were ready to spread the news! I know there are still lots of people who should have gotten phone calls, and for that I apologize that you are finding out now, but I was just ready to get it out there! And now I will answer the questions that typically follow up this kind of announcement. 1. Were you trying? Well....not exactly. From the beginning I have felt pretty strongly that we were not in control of this whole baby-making situation. I have known many women who got pregnant on birth control, or when they didn't even know they could, and those who "planned" it and then it has taken longer than hoped. I've just always been pretty sure that when the Lord determined we were ready, He'd ...

Baby Boy #3!

We are expecting baby boy #3 and since I documented a good amount of my pregnancies with the older two, I want to at least start off giving this one the same treatment! I am due May 25th, though he'll probably come around the 18th by c-section. We found out in my 18 week appointment that we were having a boy and I can honestly say I've been super excited since. With two older brothers already ruining, I mean running, the house, I'm happy to bring another boy into our crazy. This pregnancy will always be remembered by having to have my gall bladder removed at week 11. As soon as I hit 6 weeks I started having intense gall bladder pain. I've dealt with gall stones since Canon was born, but they were always singular events that would pass in about 4 hours, and this pain was consistent and all day/night long. The doctors I saw encouraged me to manage it with diet and hope to get to 16 weeks before discussing surgery. I tried everything, which pretty much meant eating noth...

what's going on

We're starting to try some rice cereal. I've been pretty sporadic about it, but after his 6 month appointment (which is NEXT WEEK!) I'll start putting "solids" into our every day routine.      Canon has found his feet! Now every diaper change is just the most fun, trying to get those toes into his mouth!   Canon is officially rolling over, both sides! This particular picture happened when I had gone into my bedroom for a hot second and came out to find him on his tummy! He can do it regularly now, though he doesn't love being on his tummy and rolls back over quickly.  Other things going on: Canon is officially sleeping unswaddled!! I guess around 2 weeks ago, we started again with the one arm out and went from there. He now sleeps in a fleece sleep sack with arms. I'm not going to lie, the process wasn't quite as daunting as I had originally thought, but I think that is because we waited until he was really ready.  ...
