2015

Aaron went back to school yesterday and Canon is in daycare, so I feel like this week actually marks the beginning of my maternity leave. Just me and Ben getting to know each other and hopefully establishing some routines before I go back to work at the end of February. With maternity leave "starting" and the beginning of a new year coinciding, it was an obvious time for me to be thinking about what I want out of these next 8 weeks and this upcoming year. Aaron and I had a quick discussion about family goals for 2015 the other night and here is our rough draft.

Schultz Family 2015 Goals
·      pay off debt
·      take a trip to New Orleans or Nebraska
·      say the Lord’s Prayer with Canon each night
·      get a minivan (okay this is more one of my goals)
·      date night 1x/month
·      read the Augsburg Confession together
·      host at our apartment 1x/month
My Maternity Leave Goals

·      enjoy the newborn/baby stage
·      get this baby sleeping mostly through the night
·      get him on a good napping schedule
·      figure out pumping at work
·      exercise 20 min every day
·      have coffee with a friend 1x/week
·      BLOG
·      do something spiritual everyday – reading, writing, praying or listening

Obviously, those second 3 goals are to prepare for the transition of me back to work, but I really want everything I do the next 8 weeks to fall under the first goal - to enjoy the newborn/baby stage. I was actually just "interrupted" while writing this by that sweet crying newborn and instead of getting him settled and racing back to the computer, I let him lay on me for a good 20 minutes. All I could think during that time was "don't wish this away. He will never be this little again. There will always be something to finish on my to do list, but he won't always snuggle like this". So my big goal is to remind myself of that even when I'm not mostly sleeping through the night or his naps are crazy. Those must come secondary to enjoying him while this season lasts.

My hope is to return to these at the end of everything month and evaluate how we are doing. If anyone has any great advice on minivans (and convincing husbands they are necessary) or pumping at work, (or anything else) I'd love to hear them!!!

Also, I want to say a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my mom! She is the best mom and MoMo around! I am so glad we live near each other and that we get to see each other often. I especially appreciate all the ways you have cared for me as I've become a mom myself. Hope your (snowy) day is wonderful!

  1. I just cried reading about you stepping away to let that sweet boy sleep on your for 20 minutes. You know this already but it goes by way too fast!! Love your goals, especially the one about convincing the hubby that y'all need a minivan. HA! Don't know if you saw, but E and I are going to start sharing our monthly goals too and we're bringing back the confessions on the 15th of this month. I'd love for you to join us with some of your confessions since your posts always either make me crack up or cry, or often times both. :) You're such a good mama, Katie!! Love on that little boy lots today!

Baby Boy #3!

We are expecting baby boy #3 and since I documented a good amount of my pregnancies with the older two, I want to at least start off giving this one the same treatment! I am due May 25th, though he'll probably come around the 18th by c-section. We found out in my 18 week appointment that we were having a boy and I can honestly say I've been super excited since. With two older brothers already ruining, I mean running, the house, I'm happy to bring another boy into our crazy. This pregnancy will always be remembered by having to have my gall bladder removed at week 11. As soon as I hit 6 weeks I started having intense gall bladder pain. I've dealt with gall stones since Canon was born, but they were always singular events that would pass in about 4 hours, and this pain was consistent and all day/night long. The doctors I saw encouraged me to manage it with diet and hope to get to 16 weeks before discussing surgery. I tried everything, which pretty much meant eating noth...

His and Hers

Aaron has officially started his second year of seminary! To commemorate, I thought I'd paste the answers to some questions we were both recently asked. A way to get an idea of both sides of our life right now. My answers: How did you spend your summer?  We had the best summer! Aaron took Hebrew in June and July, and I had my first summer as a stay at home mom. We went to the beach, pool, the library, visited Chicago and came to Alexandria twice!!  What are you most looking forward to (in your 2nd year at Seminary)?  The “cloud” over the 2nd year is getting ready for our vicarage. We’ll meet with the placement director in October and will find out the location in April! So there will be lots of hypothetical conversations, wishlists and prayers leading up to that!  Otherwise, I’m excited that we’ll be just minutes away from our church and school. I hope to get our whole family to matins more weekdays than not and Canon will begin a first communion class this ...

Fort Wayne Fun!

To be honest, when Aaron told me we were likely moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana....I wasn't thrilled at the geographical part of that statement. I didn't know much about the midwest and thought that Fort Wayne was a tiny town with lots of cows, corn and not much else. Thankfully, I was wrong! Fort Wayne is actually awesome. There are TWO Chick-fil-a's, lots of parks and playgrounds, rivers that run through, an awesome Children's zoo and much more. Here just a quick snapshot of some of the fun we've had this summer in Indiana. Camping - friends invited Aaron and the big boys on their first overnight tent camping experience! This state park was just 45 minutes from our house. I came up with the littles, then left way late to sleep in our own beds! The next morning they got to canoe! Hiking - we had a goal of hiking each Saturday morning that was free this summer, and we succeeded twice! Once in town, and once just about an hour away. So fun to be in the ...
